WHAT ARE AREAS?
The idea of an area is that it allows for the voice of each addict to be represented. GSRs traveling once per year to their local Area Assembly is within reach for every group. Groups needn’t fund a delegate to travel directly to the International Conference, which can be expensive, time-consuming, and inconvenient.
Business conducted at the area assembly may then be taken by an elected area delegate to the 2025 ISO of SAA Conference, held in Austin, TX on May 23-26.
By having a tiered structure, the voice of each addict, group, and area may be heard.

The fantastically written ISO Area Handbook may be downloaded at https://saa-recovery.org/wp-content/uploads/Area-Handbook-2025.pdf
what are Group Service Representatives?
Each SAA Group ought to elect a Group Service Representative (GSR) and an Alternate. This should be done immediately. Click here to download the highly informative pamphlet on Group Service Representative service role, https://saa-recovery.org/wp-content/uploads/GSR-pamphlet-web-version.pdf
Once elected, to get the full benefit, GSR should file with the ISO of SAA. The electronic GSR registration form may be filled out here, https://saa-recovery.org/iso/gsr-registration-form/
What happens at the Area 25 Assemply?
Once per year, there is an Area Assembly meeting. In the Minnesota area, we are called Area 25, US-Gopher.
Although registering as a GSR is the preferred method, anyone can attend the area assembly meeting and represent their group…. not just GSRs.
The business conducted at the area assembly includes:
Electing a Delegate to the ISO Conference
Electing an Alternate to the ISO Conference
Electing an Area 25 Chair
Electing an Area 25 Secretary
Electing an Area 25 Treasurer
Deciding upon Business Motions
GSRs may come to the Area 25 Assembly with business motions from their groups.
For those of you who have attended the ISO Delegate Conference in the past, you understand how those are conducted.
The concept of areas was approved by the ISO Conference in 2019.
FUNDING OUR DELEGATES and alternates TO THE CONFERENCE
As mentioned above, a Delegate and Alternate to the ISO Conference are elected at the area assembly. Now we need to get them to the ISO Conference.
Each Area should account for funding their delegate or alternate to the ISO Conference.
Travel, lodging and food for three days in Austin, TX adds up. This is just a ballpark. Let’s say $1100 per person:
$350 round-trip flight
$200 hotel for May 22
$200 hotel for May 23
$150 ground transportation
$200 food
$200 hotel for May 24 (optional to attend the Convention)
$200 hotel for May 25 (optional to attend the Convention)
It is suggested that area groups chip in to provide for that funding.
If 25 groups share in the funding, then each groups contribution of $88 would allow for both an area delegate and an area alternate to attend the ISO Conference in Austin, TX.
Checks and funding will be accepted at the Area 25 Assembly on April 5th. More details to come.
